Stretch marks

Stretch marks are thin bands of reddened skin that form as a result of skin being subjected to prolonged tension forces . Growth spurts, increased weight, pregnancy, increased muscle mass due to weight -lifting are some of the factors that can cause stretch marks to develop. The tensile strength of the skin is disrupted, tearing collagen, which subsequently heals as a scar that is commonly called a stretch mark or striae distensae. Initially, stretch marks appear as wavy thin red lines, which over time turn white, smooth, and shiny.

Topical prescription medications combined with procedures such as laser and microneedling can help improve the appearance.

Males and females can have stretch marks. They are commonly located on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, groin, around armpits, breasts, and midback.
