Skin tags are small outgrowths of skin that can appear around the neck, underarms, under breasts, and groin. These are benign growths that can be removed in the office. Sometimes skin tags can become irritated from rubbing on clothing, shaving or catching on necklaces. One of the most common reasons for removal is simply cosmetic concern.

What causes skin tags?

There is data showing that weight gain is associated with increased production of growth factors in the skin, such as epidermal growth factor and insulin-like growth hormone. These signaling peptides can cause overgrowth of certain skin areas. It is not known why skin tags have a predilection to occur in flexural areas.

It is common to develop skin tags during pregnancy.
