Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition that is present in about 50% of the population. It is often associated with dry skin and atopic dermatitis. Although keratosis pilaris is asymptomatic, patients are not fond of the rough, bumpy appearance. Plugs of keratin in hair follicles are characteristic and there can be redness around the follicles. Typical areas of involvement are outer upper arms, cheeks, thighs, and buttocks. Treatments are aimed at dissolving the keratin plugs. Over the counter topical lotions containing keratolytics can be used. Medication creams can be prescribed if stronger treatment is needed. A series of narrow band Intense Pulsed Light treatments can minimize background redness.
