Diamond Microdermabrasion

Diamond microdermabrasion is a non-chemical and non-invasive procedure that polishes and refines the outermost layer skin using a wand that is composed of finely crushed diamond particles. The wand is moved across the skin surface, removing the dead outer layer of skin cells to expose younger, healthier-looking skin layers. A vacuum in the wand simultaneously sweeps away the old cells. Skin feels smoother and softer after treatment. Black heads and white heads can be removed. Microdermabrasion is used on the face to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and superficial discoloration. This treatment also promotes the development of a new skin cells that produce higher levels of collagen and elastin, to improve texture and diminish the appearance of fine lines. There is no downtime associated with these treatments. You can resume your usual activities immediately.

In the October 2009 issue of the Archives of Dermatology, researchers compared different microdermabrasion systems and found that only the large diamond-studded microdermabrasion system increased collagen in the skin and improved photoaging changes. Crystal microdermabrasion machines are commonly used in spas but do not afford the anti-aging benefits achieved with diamond dermabrasion.

When Will Results Be Seen?
In general, benefits from microdermabrasion treatments are immediately apparent. However, optimal results will not be visible until all recommended treatments have been completed. The number of treatments required typically ranges from five to twelve sessions spaced a week or two apart. Some patients report redness or dry feeling in their skin after a treatment, but this is temporary and usually fades in a few hours or in a day. Typical care following your microdermabrasion treatment includes the use of moisturizers and sunscreens. Make-up may be applied immediately after treatment if desired.

Microdermabrasion Boosts the Efficacy of Topical Medications
Dr. Wong has been providing diamond microdermabrasion for patients as one of the first line treatments for improving a number of conditions characteristic of aging and problematic skin. She has observed excellent results for clearing acne, rosacea, and smoothing acne scars. The treatment deep cleans the skin pores allowing topical prescription medications to be absorbed more effectively. Diamond microdermabrasion is a nice adjuvant therapy to combine with bleaching, anti-aging, and acne treatment regimens.
